Win Pe Myint
U Win Pe Myint (b. 1948) is a noted Burmese painter, celebrated for his masterful still life works in oil, watercolor, and pastel . Born in Minbu, Magway Region, in 1948, he graduated from Rangoon Arts and Sciences University in 1970 with a major in Botany . He studied under four outstanding art masters: Lun Gywe, Shwe Oung Thame, Paw Oo Thet, and Thein Han . He should not be confused with the earlier Burmese painter Win Pe of Mandalay, born in 1936 .

U Win Pe Myint is particularly renowned for his realistic still life works, which display an intimate understanding of color and composition . His works are executed with fine detail, almost approaching photo-realism, and often evoke a mood of quiet loneliness . In recent years, he has also painted landscapes and portraits . In February 2005, he opened his studio, “True Colour,” in Hlaingthaya Township, featuring over a hundred of his paintings .
He has held numerous solo exhibitions in Yangon, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Thailand . His works are held in prestigious collections, including the National Museum of Myanmar, the Singapore Art Museum, and Singtel, Singapore . He is known by his signature “WPM” .
While still life remains his signature, Win Pe Myint is an artist of restless curiosity. In 2010, he ventured into watercolour, a medium he described as “mysterious” and liberating. His watercolour landscapes of upper Burma and Shan State, born from his travels around the country, contrast sharply with the controlled precision of his oils, revealing a playful and spontaneous side to his artistry.
His dedication to his craft is evident in his prolific output and extensive exhibition history. Since his first solo show in 1977, he has held numerous exhibitions across Myanmar, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Thailand. In February 2005, he opened his studio, True Colour, in Yangon’s Hlaingthaya Township, a space designed by the architect Aung Soe Myint that houses over a hundred of his paintings. Win Pe Myint stands as a master who bridges the legacy of his teachers with a personal vision of quiet, meticulous beauty, continually evolving and never ceasing to explore the possibilities of paint.
