Soe Naing
Soe Naing (1961–2024) was one of Myanmar's leading abstract expressionist painters, celebrated for his vibrant, energetic works that broke free from artistic convention. Born in Yangon on July 26, 1961, his path to becoming a full-time artist was far from conventional. He initially graduated from the University of Yangon in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science in Zoology, hoping his scientific knowledge would aid his drawing of animals.

His artistic training began at the Rangoon Art Association, where he was first taught to draw according to a strict, regimented syllabus focused on representational forms. He felt this was a form of creative suppression. A pivotal moment came when he discovered imported art books and learned about abstract expressionism, inspiring a new philosophy: “I could start and end anywhere I wanted”. Working in this stylistic vein since the late 1990s, he broke free from traditional constraints, focusing on line, color, and movement to capture a sense of emotional truth.
Soe Naing’s work, which depicted figures of humans, dogs, cats, and horses, was driven by a creative compulsion; “I always paint because I can’t help painting,” he once stated. His signature energetic and dexterous brushwork, which he called the “freedom of movement of lines,” was recognized as creating a new trend in Myanmar modernism. He was a prolific artist, presenting his work in more than 45 solo exhibitions since 1994 and participating in over 100 group shows, with collectors worldwide purchasing his art. Soe Naing passed away in 2024, leaving a lasting legacy in Myanmar’s contemporary art scene.
