Aung Ko

His artistic practice is deeply community-centric. In 2007, he founded the Thu Ye Dan Village Art Project in his native village, an ongoing initiative that fosters artistic expression and collaboration with local communities. He has participated in major international exhibitions, including the Singapore Biennale (2008), the Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale (2009), and documenta fifteen in Kassel (2022).

Aung Ko’s work is a profound commentary on Myanmar’s socio-political reality. He uses a wide range of media—from painting and sculpture to photography and video—choosing the form that best supports his concepts. His series “Ko Shwe” (Mr. Gold) features golden, hairless self-portraits that explore the vulnerability of the human condition while referencing Myanmar as the “Golden Land” and the dreams of its people working abroad. He also paints modern, stylized portraits of Myanmar women, often on black backgrounds.

Following the 2021 military coup, Aung Ko was forced into exile. He now lives and works in Paris, France, where he continues his socially engaged practice. In 2022, he participated in documenta fifteen, and his works are held in international collections, including the Singapore Art Museum.

၂၀၂၁ ခုနှစ် စစ်အာဏာသိမ်းမှုအပြီးတွင် အောင်ကိုသည် ပြည်နှင်ဒဏ်ခံခဲ့ရသည်။ ယခုအခါ ပြင်သစ်နိုင်ငံ၊ ပါရီမြို့တွင် နေထိုင်ကာ လူမှုရေးဆိုင်ရာ ပါဝင်ပတ်သက်မှုရှိသော အနုပညာလုပ်ငန်းကို ဆက်လက်လုပ်ဆောင်နေသည်။ ၂၀၂၂ ခုနှစ်တွင် documenta fifteen ၌ ပါဝင်ခဲ့ပြီး သူ၏ လက်ရာများကို စင်ကာပူအနုပညာပြတိုက်အပါအဝင် နိုင်ငံတကာစုဆောင်းမှုများတွင် ထိန်းသိမ်းထားရှိသည်။
