Born in Yangon in 1972, Min Zaw pursued his formal art education at the State School of Fine Arts in Yangon from 1991 to 1994. He continued his studies at the University of Culture in Yangon, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1998.
His artistic practice is defined by two distinct bodies of work: meditative landscapes of mountains and temples, and portraits of ordinary people. He is known for a graphically bold, minimalist style, employing eye-catching modern colors like magenta, cerulean, and violet to give his traditional subjects a contemporary perspective. A characteristic textural effect in his work is achieved by crumpling paper before it is spray-painted with acrylic.
Min Zaw has been an active figure in the Myanmar art scene. In 2002, he was a finalist in the ASEAN Art Award, which was a significant achievement as it was the first year the award was extended to include entries from Myanmar. He is also a founding member of the artist collective Studio Square, established in Yangon in 2003. His work has been exhibited internationally since his first show in Singapore in 2000 and is held in prestigious public collections, including the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum and the Singapore Art Museum. He continues to live and work in his native Yangon.
