Although he began painting in 1963, his career faced significant obstacles due to the political climate of the 1970s and 1980s. In 1984, his entire exhibition of 120 paintings was banned by censorship officials who deemed his works unfit for public display. Faced with such restrictions, he refrained from public exhibitions for 29 years, continuing to create work in private. Throughout this period, he persisted in developing a unique style that moved away from traditional landscapes and pagoda scenes. He focused instead on traditional subjects such as dancers, rural life, and figures from Myanmar’s 37 nats, yet reimagined them through stylized, intense, and emotionally raw representations of human faces and nudes, rendered with his personal modern flavor.

Following the eventual easing of censorship, Aung Khaing’s career saw a major resurgence. He held his first solo exhibition in 2013 at the Lokanat Galleries in Yangon, a landmark event that formally reintroduced his work to the public. Aung Ko’s work is a profound commentary on Myanmar’s socio-political reality. He uses a wide range of media—from painting and sculpture to photography and video—choosing the form that best supports his concepts. His series “Ko Shwe” (Mr. Gold) features golden, hairless self-portraits that explore the vulnerability of the human condition while referencing Myanmar as the “Golden Land” and the dreams of its people working abroad. Chann Nyein’s technical foundation was built under the expert tutelage of prominent figures in the Burmese art community. He studied under a wide array of accomplished mentors, including U Myint Oo, U Aung Thin Oo, U Tin Soe, U M. Tun Aung, U Moe Nyo, U Kyaw Min Htike, U Tay Zar Linn, Daw Nway Ni Win, and Daw Sandar Win Tun. This rigorous training at the National University of Arts and Culture provided the disciplined framework he now uses to push the boundaries of contemporary painting.

His international debut came in 2005 when he contributed to the renowned “BEEPPU” Project in Beppu, Japan, marking a pivotal moment in his career. In 2018, at the age of 82, he held his first solo exhibition at Suvannabhumi Art Gallery in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Though he passed away in Mogok in 2020, his legacy continues to thrive. His evocative works have been celebrated posthumously in two solo exhibitions—one in Chiang Mai in 2022 and another at Artist Space Gallery. K.M. U Lu Min has been a dedicated participant in the art world, exhibiting his work in numerous local and international group shows, including in Singapore (2001, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2008), Hong Kong (2003, 2004), and Thailand (2007, 2013).
